It is about four weeks ago I got my brain bleeding (Stroke) and I feel all right now. Strange enough, it was not so dramatic as I had imagined – of course it makes some difference, everything goes slower and my concentration is not on the top and to meet the own mortality sure makes you think.

Things that were important for me before, don’t touch me anymore. HTML5, CSS3 or whatever, don’t seem so essential for me – I suppose it take some time to be back in a normal state after a stroke. It is a struggle to get back what I had before, I need to reclaim my everyday life. Practically, for the part of this blog, it will mean that it will be more time between my blog postings. I am also hoping to find some suitable guest-bloggers.

Most developers or established tutorial makers prefer to write technically advanced and glamorous tutorials like “How To Make A Mentally Disturbed Frog Jump Out Of Your PC Scream with The Help Of jQuery And Some CSS”, or something similar. Sometimes it can be really difficult to find relevant information on the basics – one of the most common questions we get here on Cashrevelations is “how to edit the landing page template”?

This is a short and simple tutorial on how to edit an HTML template – with the help of this tutorial and some practice you can edit landing or squeeze page templates all by yourself.

Finding An HTML Template & Unpacking It

First you need an HTML template you can practice on. You can search on Internet – there are both free and premium alternatives. Or, if you are tired to search the Internet, you can simply go to our Downloads section or to our article 150 Free Landing Page Templates.

Most templates, or any type of file downloads, come packed in a ZIP file and you must unpack them before you can begin to edit them. Right click on the ZIP folder and choose “extract all” – this will open your extraction wizard. Just click “next” and then select the location to extract your templates to. If you have problems with uncompressing (unzip) the templates you could try an online tool like WobZip.org.

Edit The HTML Template

First, make sure your template is an HTML template and nothing else – frequently we get questions from troubled people who try open a PHP page in their browser or try to install a usual HTML template on a WordPress blog or the opposite. The simplest way to test if you have an HTML template is to first locate you template and double click on it – if it opens in your browser and looks like a usual page, then it is an HTML template.

Locate your HTML template and right click on it – choose “Open with Notes” or “Open with WordPad”. By now, you see the source code for the template. Find the text you want to change – remove it and paste or write in your own text. In upper left corner, under File, click Save – it’s important that you save after any changes in your HTML document.

We Repeat:

• Right click on the template
• Choose “Open with Notes” or “Open with WordPad”
• Locate the text you want to change and remove it
• Paste or write in your own text to the template
• Under File (upper left corner), click Save

Open your HTML template in your browser by double clicking on it. If everything looks all right, then you are finished with your editing. But usually it doesn’t look all right at all.

One problem is that text lines often are too long. You can adjust the length of the text lines with a <br /> tag. Just put <br /> where you want to break the text line.

If you want to change the appearance of your template (body color, headline size or text size etc.) you need to change it from the CSS file – most modern landing page or squeeze page templates use CSS for styling. But editing CSS should not make you nervous.

If you make a copy of your template before you begin with your editing, then you can experiment all you want – and it is exactly what you should do. Don’t be afraid to play and change in the CSS code, nothing bad will happen – if something get broken, just make another copy from the original template.

To get information on CSS and how to edit CSS, we suggest you visit CSS Tutorial and CSS Reference by W3Schools. They provide you with information and coding examples in a very pedagogical way – they even have interactive example pages you can practice on.

Summary Of How to Edit An HTML Template

Editing HTML templates – all the process, from downloading and all the way to the ready template – consists of six easy parts:

1. Download A Template
2. Unpack Or Unzip The ZIP Archive
3. Right click on The Template
4. Choose “Open with Notes” Or “Open with WordPad”
5. Paste Or Write In Your Own Text To The Template
6. Under File (Upper Left Corner), Click Save

You have now edited the HTML template all by yourself. It is easy, and you sure will save some money when you don’t need to hire someone to do it for you. The only you need is practice and a bit of patience – and it also doesn’t harm to make a copy of the original template before you start editing.

We usually don’t deal (at least not very often) with templates to the Blogger platform – the lack of flexibility compared with something like WordPress makes it, honestly, a bit boring. But we do understand, that it is just the simplicity that is Blogger’s strength – millions of people that normally wouldn’t write online, have been able to blog because of the Blogger platforms user friendly simplicity and accessibility.

Blogger is a good choice if you enjoy the “writing” part of blogging, and don’t have the knowledge or will to style a blog from scratch – but that is not an excuse to not have a well structured and a bit personal blog appearance: In this article we present five Blogger templates that you can download for free and easily enhance your blog appearance.

The different XHTML templates presented here in this article are not in any particular order – and Cashrevelations.com is not affiliated with any of the template designers.

This is the second part of our article Convert XHTML Template Into WordPress Theme, where we converted the Natural Blues XHTML template to a functional WordPress theme by using a minimum of files. This time we will make it to look more like a real WP theme.

You might have noticed that we don’t write about WP coding philosophy or anything like that in this tutorial, and that is all on purpose. We just write how to do, not why – we think the tutorial would be more confusing with to much technical details, and if you are interested of that we recommend you to read the excellent WordPress Codex.

Do not experiment with these conversations online! We seriously recommend you to Install WordPress Locally On Your Computer – then you can test your theme without risk.

1. Preparation

First read the first part of this article, Convert XHTML Template Into WordPress Theme, and if you haven’t downloaded the source files in that article, you should do it now:

The converted XHTML template (the WordPress theme) has a commented code you should take some time and study. Overall, it is necessary to read the first part of this article to be able to follow this part. And we continue to use the Natural Blues template.

2. Create 3 New Files With Your Favorite Text Editor

Open you favorite text editor and create 3 new files and place them in your theme folder. It is important that you name them as following:

header.php
sidebar.php
footer.php

These files are empty right now, but we will chop up the index.php we converted before (in the first part of this article) and paste some of the code to these empty files.

3. Chop The Theme You Converted Before

Remember that we are still working on the Natural Blues XHTML template. If you use an own template, you need to adapt the following instructions to that specific template.

Header

Open the index.php in the WP theme we converted in the first part of this article.

Mark all the code to just below this code:

<div id="navcontainer">
<ul id="navlist"><?php wp_list_categories('title_li=0'); ?></ul>
</div>

Cut out, open the header.php you created earlier, paste in all the code you cut out from index.php, and save. You now ready with your header.php.

Sidebar

In index.php, find this code:

Mark out the sidebar section all the way down to the last two </div> tags, cut out. Open the sidebar.php you created before and paste in all the code you cut out from index.php, and save. You are now ready with your sidebar.php.

Footer

In index.php, find this code:

<div id="footer_left">

Mark out everything from the first footer div and all the way down to </html>, cut out. Open the footer.php you created just before, and paste in all the code you cut our from index.php, and save. You are now ready with footer.php.

4. Prepare Your Index File

In this section we are going to call for the header, sidebar and footer PHP’s we just finished. You should have the index file open by now – if not, open index.php.

Paste in the following code in the very top of index.php:

Now, find this code (it is in the top of the file):

And below that code, paste in this code:

If you use a different template than Natural Blues, it might be possible that you paste the code to the very top of index.php like this:

If you use a local installation of WP on your computer, you can experiment until you get the result you want to achieve. In this template the sidebar call come after the main div.

After you have done the above, you go to the very end of the index.php and paste this code there:

<?php get_footer(); ?>

After you have done that, save the index.php. You are now ready with your index.php and you should have a fully functional WordPress theme with a header.php, index.php, sidebar.php and footer.php.

5. Add Comments And Single PHP

You have a functional theme but your visitors can’t for example comment, and that type of functionality is always fun to have in a real WP theme. There is a few ways you can add single.php and comments.php to your theme, but we will use the most easy way.

Go to your local WordPress installation (or download the WordPress platform), the themes folder, and open the folder for the default WordPress theme.

The path to the default theme looks like this:

wordpress> wp-content> themes> default

Copy the comments.php and single.php and paste them in to your own theme folder (the converted Natural Blues template). Probably you need to do some changes in the copied files to adapt them to your theme. Below you have the changes we did.

Open single.php, and find following code:

Remove it, and replace it with this code (copied from the top of index.php):

And save. You are now ready with your single.php. The comments.php do not need any changes – we use it as it is but if you want, you can do some additional CSS styling.

The only thing left to do is to add a piece of CSS code. Open style.css, and paste the following code into the stylesheet:

And save. You are now ready with converting an XHTML template to a WordPress theme.
